Today, a completely updated version of Ixquick, the powerful metasearch engine (), was launched simultaneously in Europe and the United States. Ixquick always combines at least 10 international and local search engines, which yields more search results. Thanks to the Power Search and the option to refine searches, steering a search in a certain direction becomes really simple. Furthermore, numerous new functions were added, including an international telephone directory.
Ixquick uses an exclusive star rating system enabling the user to quickly evaluate the search results. This system awards one star for each search engine ranking a search result in its top 10. A search result with a five-star rating means that five search engines ranked this result in their top 10.
"This system provides users with the most relevant and complete results," said Alex van Eesteren, Surfboard BV spokesperson. "Ixquick simultaneously searches at least 10 of the most popular search engines, such as Yahoo/Alta Vista, Ask Jeeves and Gigablast. This combination covers a much larger area of the Internet than Google, AltaVista, or any other individual search engine. In addition, the well-known problem of commercial manipulation carries considerably less weight at Ixquick, thus securing the relevance of the searches," said Van Eesteren. "Ixquick is also the only metasearch engine combining local and international search engines. We clearly focus on combining quality and user-friendliness. For this reason, we didn’t just improve the algorithm, but the interface as well."
The updated Ixquick features the following new functions:
- Specification of results (functional clustering): Each search result is marked with a v and an X. If a certain search result is extremely good, the user can click on the checkmark for similar results
- Universal Power Search for extremely refined searches.
- Languages: Ixquick can search in 17 languages.
- Both national and international price comparison.
- An international telephone directory making it possible to find people and companies all over the world. It is also possible to perform a reverse search, i.e., using a telephone number to find people or companies.
Since 2000, the metasearch engine, which originated in the United States and went live in 1998, is owned by the Dutch company Surfboard BV, located in Harlem.
